The Vanoi Valley

The valley, known as "Green Heart of Trentino" too, is surrounded from peaks of Lagorai's chain and from massif of "Cima d'Asta" (more than hundred those which exceed 2000mt.). Owes its name to the stream that goes it through, the Vanoi, main feeder of Cismon. Other than Canal San Bovo, the main village, sited to the confluence of stream Lozen in Vanoi, are numerous the smaller villages: Caoria, laid on the slopes of Monte Cauriol, the centers of Prade, Cicona and Zortea, sited northerly of the main village in sunny position, groups of houses (colmèi) that formed Ronco in the opposite slope near Passo Brocon, the pass of Gobbera, rised on pass which links Primiero to Vanoi.

Canal San Bovo and its hamlets

Canal San Bovo is a pleasant and welcoming village sited in the neighbourhood of the confluence of stream Lozen in Vanoi, on a sunning sheep-track, in front of the greener meadow slopes scattered of farmhouses and barns. Caoria has marked alpine characteristics and rises on the confluence of rio Valsorda in Vanoi before "Monte Cauriol". For fans of mountain many are the possibilities of hiking over "Cima d'Asta" and Lagorai. Going thorugh Passo Gobbera you meet Prade, Cicona and Zortea, quiet small villages in sunny position. Opposite of valley you find Ronco e Cainari, small villages on steep slopes of "Monte Remitta" and of "Pizzo degli Uccelli"

Do not miss:

  • Casa dell'Ecomuseo (Ecomuseum House), Canal San Bovo: Information point on mission and activities of Ecomuseum of Vanoi, with interesting preparations dedicated to seven themes (water, sacred, mobility, grass, wood, war and rock), the water room and the narration room.
  • Museo della Grande Guerra sul Lagorai (Museum of World War I on Lagorai), Caoria: opened on 1991 gathers the historical memories of the World War I combacted on Lagorai mounts. Uniforms, arms, personal objects of fighters, both Italians and Austrians, and all sorts of memorabilia refound in this place are exposed to remember tragic events.
  • Museo Arti e Mestieri (Arts and Crafts Museum), Caoria: gathers and shows all simply objects used in everyday life and work tools of our forefathers parted in tematic "corners", dedicated to different topics, for example the cheese spinneret, the flax spinneret, the job of wood-worker...
  • Sentiero Etnografico (Ethnographic Path): it's a group of tracks which stretch through Caoria at 845 mt. high and "Malga Vesnòta de sora" at 1879 mt. cross places that inhabitans had animated, biult and modified in centuries with jobs. The suggested itineraries are four: the "Anello della Val" (Valley Ring) with season life in village and the religiously of its inhabitants, the "Anello dei Pradi" (Meadow Ring) with the meadow life and the haymaking, "Anello del Bosc" (Wood Ring) dedicated to woody resources with the visit of "Siega de Valzanca" (Valzanca sawmill) an hydraulic sawmill powered by Valzanca stream's water and born in 1870 then recently rebuilt. At the end the "Anello della Montagna" (Mountain Ring) with hut life.
  • "Festa delle Brise" (Feast of Cep), Canal San Bovo: in the middle September, three days dedicated to "Boletus edulis" the esteemed cep which grows abundantly in woods of Vanoi valley and on base of many typical dishes. Hikes with mycological experts, cultural appointments and gastronomical stands.

Calaita Lake

Sited on 1607mt. high, is one of the most attended place of Natural Park Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino. Reachable with a paved road from Zortea or Passo Gobbera, in a few km you arrive to Calaita Lake. It's situated in a grassy area and surrounded by wood of fir trees. Starting point of many hikes both on foot and on mountain bike is ideal place for lovers of fishing. In winter, with frozen surface, the lake becomes a cross-country runs or base for hikes with snowshoe or ski mountaineering.
